about us

although terra matcha is new to the market, our story begins over 800 years ago when matcha cultivation and consumption was first introduced to japan. cultivated by zen buddhist monks, matcha was incorporated into their plant-based lifestyles to provide nutrition and heightened concentration for meditation. like those early matcha consumers, our quest for nutritious organic matcha is never ending.

at terra matcha, we procure the highest quality organic matcha green tea from the mineral-rich fields of southern japan. our travels introduced us to visionary farmers, who resowed their fields and converted their methods for organic farming and cultivation. the ideal terroir and abundant rainfall of southern japan ensures only the best organic tea plants are grown and harvested year after year.

that is why our promises to you are very simple:

  • to work closely with individuals who share our passion for high quality organic teas.
  • to curate the best organic matcha green tea for a balanced mind, body, and soul.
  • to provide our organic matcha at competitive, affordable prices in the U.S. market.

our matcha

at its core, all matcha starts from the same source, yet it requires a lot of work, patience, and care to produce a truly high quality organic matcha powder.

we start with the farmers. experts of their craft, our partners have been producing matcha green tea in southern japan for over 30 years. their passion, dedication, and vision consistently inspire us to share their art of tea globally.

they start with the camellia sinensis tea plant. green tea, one of the four teas produced from camellia sinensis, is carefully cultivated according to international organic growing standards. only USDA approved fertilizers can be used to nurture and grow the plants. about 21 days prior to harvest, the plants are covered in a layer of shade. this technique preserves the chlorophyll content in the tea leaves, producing a vibrant green color packed with antioxidants.

the process

during the spring or summer, the green tea leaves are harvested throughout the season. once collected, the organic tea leaves are divided up by their intended use; the youngest tender leaves are set aside for the ceremonial green tea blends, while the rest are collected for culinary blends. when production starts, the green tea leaves are washed immediately, steamed to prevent oxidization, sorted by parts (leaves, veins, stems), and stone milled with hand-carved grinders to create a delicate green powder that is smooth to the touch.

before being packaged, the stone milled powders are meticulously tested and blended to create the best quality organic ceremonial and culinary matcha grades for your enjoyment. lastly, understanding that high quality organic matcha does not come easy, we competitively price our products with affordability, health, and wellness in mind to provide the best quality organic matcha green tea for a balanced mind, body, and soul.

the ideal location

located on the southern island of kyushu, the tea fields are optimally located for growing organic varietals because of its mineral-rich volcanic soil and remoteness from densely populated urban cities. farmers in this area have been cultivating for several decades, often passing down their learned techniques to the next generation.

southern japan’s ideal growing conditions can produce a harvest up to four times a year, compared to 2-3 harvests in other japanese tea growing regions. with ample land, tea fields in southern japan are often remote, making this a beautiful and productive region for some of the finest matcha cultivation. in addition, southern japan is known for its temperate climate, comfortable year-round weather, plentiful rainfall, and exceptionally rich volcanic soil (thanks to the active volcano, mount sakurajima).
